Habits often have a bad reputation

…but some habits can be helpful and healthy. Stop and think about your talents for a moment.

Like mine right now is “I am officially on vacation for 2 weeks!” and believe me this is a habit that I am not a Champion at.

What are you not doing that would help you enjoy your Champion talents more, get more done or be more effective?

It might be a practice that worked well for you in the past but that you stopped doing for some reason…or it could be a new activity that you’d like to try. It’s possible to turn helpful or healthy practices into new habits….and actually stick!

Here’s a step by step guide:

1. Identify a practice that you’d like to become an automatic part of your life.
Perhaps you want to spend regular time honing your craft. Maybe you want to complete a particular amount of creative work each week. Or meditate regularly. Participate in a regular weekly gym, aerobic, yoga or pilates classes. Complete an open water/marathon swim or an ironman or Olympic distance triathlon. What practices would you like to turn into habits? Select one of these habits as your target habit. (It’s helpful to focus on one at a time).

2. Be specific and concrete.
Instead of saying ’swim more’, ‘eat less’, ’smoke less’, run/gym more’; identify exactly how much you want to swim/eat/smoke/gym/run/bike. “I want to swim one workout a day, at least three days a week, every week.” OR “I want to spend at least an hour a day writing/planning/preparing/ at least three days a week, every week.” The more specific the practice, the likelier it will become a habit.

3. Ask yourself: why?
Identify the benefits of starting this habit. For example, if I practice my piano/guitar at least an hour a day, I’ll become a better musician; I’ll increase my repertoire; I’ll do better in auditions; I’ll feel so much better. If I participate in gym/yoga/swim workouts at least an hour a day, I’ll become a better husband/wife, increase my fitness levels, decrease my stress levels, increase my productivity in my work day, be a better person to live with and increase desire to eat healthier foods.

Write down as many reasons as possible to start your new habits and practices and keep them handy. Review your list at least daily.

4. Breakdown your intended habit into reasonable, bite-size douable baby steps.
If your target habit is to compose a new song every day, for example, then you might begin the process by committing to write a song a week (assuming that sounds realistic for you). After that becomes second nature, aim for two songs a week. When, eventually, that practice seems like old hat, go for three a week…until eventually you are writing a song every day.

5. Start small.
Your beginning practice should be so easy it’s laughable. Guarantee your success. Returning to the last example, if writing a song a week is easy as pie, that’s a great place to start. If, however, the notion of writing a song a week puts you in a sweat, then choose something smaller and easier. Aim for a viable chorus or verse instead. Still shaking? Aim for a musical idea or a cool phrase that might become a lyric someday.

Rest assured, wherever you start is fine. AVOID JUDGING yourself or being too hard on yourself. Pick a practice that’s really, truly easy.

For example, let’s say your target habit is to paint for at least an hour a day. You might start with the practice of painting for at least five minutes a day, at least four days a week. “Five minutes? I can’t get anything done in five minutes,” you are apt to wail. Yes you can. You can gesso a canvas. You can sketch out a figure. You can apply paint.
“But five minutes a day isn’t going to accomplish anything!” You’d be surprised what you can get done in five focused, undistracted minutes, dedicated to a specific task.

Another example, let’s say your goal is to swim the English Channel or a solo Rottnest Channel Swim or completing a triathlon. And you are not a competent swimmer … that is you were not in a squad/club/collegiate team at school then you might start by getting stroke correction with a coach and then practice swimming for at least ten minutes a day, at least four days a week. Fifteen minutes? Once again you may think you can’t get anything done in ten minutes. You will be surprised how much your brain will hurt from focusing on a particular stroke drill. Yes you can achieve a lot in just ten minutes.

The truth is, if you aim for minutes, you may well do more. What matters is that you do AT LEAST five/ten minutes, at least four times a week.

Let me repeat that: The important thing here is to ESTABLISH THE HABIT. The amount of time doesn’t matter. What you’re actually doing doesn’t matter. What you get done doesn’t matter. As long as you are taking steps towards your intended target habit, you are on track. That’s why it’s helpful to start with easy practices. The easier the initial practice, the more likely you’ll cultivate the new habit you desire.

At the beginning of the Rottnest Channel swim squad season I spend alot of time at least half of the time in the water for the first month focusing on technique. Once a habit, good or bad, is set, it is hard to break! especially once you get into the building endurance and up the mileage.

6. Set yourself up for success.
Start your new, easy practice when you’re really ready. Put in place the support or resources you need — be it information, a teacher/mentor/coach or a trusted “progress buddy” (like a diet buddy to keep you on track).
If you’re the kind of person that needs to make a public commitment to get yourself to do something, then email your friends and tell them your intentions. Ask them to hold you accountable to your new practice. In contrast, if you suspect your ‘friends’ might be jealous or competitive or might unknowingly undermine your efforts, then it doesn’t serve you to tell them what you’re up to.

Very important: If you are quitting smoking or going on a diet and this is not the first time be very careful who you share your new habit. Some people will remind you that you have not been able to succeed in the past and these are not the type of supporters you want in your cheer squad.

7. Monitor your progress.
Every day, make note of what you did, related to your target habit.
I keep a journal of all my new habits and strategies to ensure I am on track just as I did keep a log book of my swimming workouts, what I ate, how much I weighed, my morning heart rate, mileage swam… and handed in every week to my coach to write a report giving me feedback.

8. Remind yourself why you’re doing this.
Until your target habit becomes like breathing for you, make it a daily practice to review your ‘benefits’ list (from step 3). This only takes a few seconds and can really help.

9. Praise yourself.
This is non-negotiable. It’ll feel pretty darned good to do what you set out to do…yet it’s important to acknowledge you successes in some tangible way. Give yourself bonus points for every day that you carry out your intended new practice. You can mark ‘X’s on a calendar. You can give yourself gold stars. You can email your creativity buddy at the end of the week to say ‘I did it!’ Yes you can email me as I am on your Champion team in the balcony cheering you on to success. And while you are at it why not WOO HOO!!! in the mirror.

10. Be kind and gentle with yourself.
If you happen to not do what you intend, avoid beating yourself up. Simply record what did (or didn’t) happen. I’m human and therefore fallible. It’s no big deal. Let’s move on. Tomorrow is another day. Look at the bigger picture: okay, I missed yesterday, but I did my new practice eight times in the past two weeks. That’s eight days I did great. Overall, I can see I’m establishing this new target habit — I’m making this practice an automatic part of my life, most days.

11. If you find yourself consistently missing your intentions, then it’s time to dig deeper. What’s going on? Do you really want to establish this new target habit? If no, then review your list of habits from step #1, pick a habit you DO want to establish and start over with that. If yes, then perhaps you’re trying to do too much too fast. Try breaking your daily/weekly practices into smaller, easier increments. Or are you trying to start too many new habits at once? If so, pick one to focus on and leave the other target habits for now.

12. When you find yourself meeting your initial baby bite-size do-able step practices regularly and consistently, up the ante a bit.
Aim to do a little bit more. Repeat the process (steps 6 - 11) as you gradually work up to performing your target habit regularly and consistently. Build momentum, slowly but surely.

13. Be patient.
Slow and steady progress is better than short-term maniacal enthusiasm followed by sudden burnout or abandonment of your intentions. Avoid thinking about what’s to come — just focus on what you need to do today. Depending on what it is you’re trying to do, it can take 21 — 30 days — or more — to establish a new habit.

14. When you’ve successfully established your new habit, be sure to reward yourself for that milestone.
Give yourself a healthy, happy treat — you deserve it. After your first target habit is well established and ingrained, you can return to your list of habits from step #1, select a new habit and go through the process again. You’ll find that each time you go through the process, you’ll get faster and faster at establishing your new target habits.
Activity: Select a healthy, helpful habit you’d like to start. Follow steps 1 -14.

Goal Achievement: My Gift to YOU!
Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Tuesday, 3rd August 2010

I received a birthday wish today “Make it your best birthday ever Shelley!” …So I am gifting you a present!

Access my birthday gift here now and the opportunity to be 1 of only 49 people in the draw to win a 3 month coaching program - 1on1 with Shelley Taylor-Smith.

Why? …. as I want YOU too to enjoy the riches that life provides, act yourself into a right way of thinking and achieve the dreams that you so deserve. I want you to stand up, step up, and simply start walking. Be the Champion that you were born to BE! … the secret to my increased energy, focus and income is yours if you want it.

The most important thing to me is not how many people like me … it’s not whether you think I’m good at what I do or not … or how much you want to bitch about me when I coach you because I ask questions directly … The important thing to me is that I fulfil the mission I was put on this Earth to achieve in a way in which I can be proud of myself. Today I know I am living my life ON PURPOSE and I am very grateful to have the opportunity to do that on a daily basis.

Dreaming of the person you would like to be, is time spent wasting the person you are. Don’t do it for money; pride; to please anyone else; or if it doesn’t feel right. Do it for love. Do it for you. Being who you were meant to be and who you are is far more important than being what everyone else expects you to be.

Access my birthday gift to you …order now.

Scenario One:
Let’s face it; these days we’re bombarded with information. It appears there is a new GURU self-help / personal development book, cd, course, teleseminar or blog, each with their own take on things and vewpoints.

You’re getting hit left and right with so many techniques that it’s hard to tell what to do or where to go next. It gets to the stage where you get angry, unfocused, maybe a little fearful and definitely overwhelmed.

Having coached hundreds, I know firsthand what happens when people get overwhelmed: NOTHING!

That’s right; you get that worked up, your brain turns to mash and you cannot work out what to do next. End result is nothing at all gets done. You procrastinate. And everything just gets put off…and for some again! If that’s you in any way, then relax, all it means is you are human. We’ve all had our ups and downs, and it’s so easy to be overwhelmed and confused about what to do next.

MY ADVICE? Simply you need to forget what everybody else is doing and just get clear on what YOU want and where YOU are going. This could be YOUR day, YOUR moment, YOUR time to shine!

Scenario Two:
We’ve all experienced it. A special day, a special moment, a special time that changed our lives. A time when everything fell into place. A time when you knew, really knew, that this was it and you were never going back to how it was before. Many of my clients who I have coached, delegates who heard me present a motivational keynote or students who attended a workshop have told me that WAS that time.

It was THE place where everything fell together; where everything became crystal clear and they knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that this WAS it!

So what is the difference between these 2 scenarios?
The clarity to “just do it”
Nike said it simply yet this is easier said than done, isn’t it?
So how do we just do it? The best plan is to just get into action, even if you have to act as if you believe that everything is okay.

If you are currently facing a motivational block or an emotional career hurdle the answer is to just do it. “There are no secrets. You’re not going to chant your way, or hope your way through it. Action is the dynamic key. It is much easier to act yourself into a right way of thinking, than it is to think yourself into a right way of acting. So stand up, step up, and simply start walking.” Simply said by Michael Tate.

Being who you were meant to be and who you are is far more important than being what everyone else expects you to be. There is nothing more fulfilling than being true to yourself. The meaning of your life …is to give your life meaning.

>> Are you actually LIVING what you value most in life?

>> Are you STRUGGLING with the heartbreak of failed hopes and dreams?

>> Are you praying for an ANSWER to the challenges you face… financial… relationships… career?

>> Do you want to take your SUCCESS up to the next level and beyond?

“What on Earth Am I Here For”

However, once you know the answer to this question—once you understand the reason for your existence — there’s an even bigger question to be answered…

“How in the world am I going to make this happen?!”

Just HOW can I live a life of passion and purpose?

What, exactly, am I expected to do?

Marathon Swimming - Champions Reunite!
Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

It took a long time… but after 56 years the best of the best reunited at Lac St Jean, Roberval, Quebec, Canada last week for “The Famous 1km Best In The World” competition, held in conjunction with the 6th FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships Roberval 2010.

Courtesty of Steeve Tremblay, included in the photo above are the Legendary Kings of Lake St Jean; Paul Asmuth, Claudio Plitt & Philip Rush joined by previous La Traversee crossing competitors Steven Munatones, Igor de Souza and myself.

50-year-old Argentinian, Claudio Plitt, confirmed his participation in the historical “La Traversee du Lac St Jean” for a total of 21 solo crossings and 5 double crossings which equalled over twelve (12) days of swimming.

Competition it was not! The 1km swim demonstrated that we all still “had it” and that “it” comes in various forms. Competition was not the word of the day but more readily heard were “enjoy, relax, easy, fun, friendship” and the most common was “not 2 laps please only 1 lap!”

And 2 laps it was …which left strategy to play an important part as it always does in open water swimming. Strategy: for most… to make it to the finish!

Results - Men’s: 1st Steven Munatones 2nd. Paul Asmuth 3rd. Claudio Plitt. Women’s: 1st. Shelley Taylor-Smith

Enjoy as Claudio Plitt shares his new “strategy” that he has adapted to his life after 50yrs and also how he will tackle the American Marathon Swimming Legend, Paul Asmuth.

Enjoy & Cheers

Overnight success or …
Monday, May 17th, 2010

Overnight success or… Years of planning and Years of just doing it!

This weekend saw two Aussies achieve amazing feats!

Saturday it was 16yr old JESSICA WATSON’s inspirational 210-day round-the-world solo performance which saw her sail into the record books and into the hearts of every Australian!

Then MARK WEBBER last night became the first Australian to win the Monaco Grand Prix since the great Jack Brabham 51 years ago. He also claimed the formula one series lead from Jenson Button, who crashed out of the race early. It is the first time an Australian has led the championship since Alan Jones in 1981.

In his post race media conference Mark Webber said “this has been two (2) years in the planning! It didn’t just happen after the win last week in Barcelona. It didn’t happen in the past 2 days here at the Grand Prix. This win is a result of alot of planning, preparation, commitment and focus on the result. It has not finished yet. We have a lot more work to do.”

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
Coach Darrel Royal

It is so easy to say, “That person is lucky.” or, “What an overnight success!” But nothing ever happens by luck. The secret is great preparation. When you are prepared, opportunity comes knocking on the door.

Both Jessica Watson & Mark Webber are two examples of…. just doing it!

People often ask me what the single most important tip for success is.

Here it is. Do more. It’s that simple. Your actions define you. Success comes to those of us prepared to take action. The willingness to take action is far more important than talent, as naturally talented people will tell you. Talent is never enough. Gutsy people get ahead. Things fall into place for them. Not everything works out exactly to plan, but they always win through. They’re irrepressible. They never stay down, for a minute. They just love to be up and running again.

Being gutsy, ballsy is open to all of us. There’s no secret that I’m about to reveal to you, or maybe there is.

It’s simple. These people take action, regardless of how they’re feeling. They don’t wait for a full moon. They don’t wait for a better time. They definitely don’t wait until they feel better about themselves, whatever that might mean. If this sounds a bit simplistic it’s because taking action, getting things done, achieving more is very straightforward. You do more, you get more, you have more, of whatever it is that you want.

The secret is, there is no secret.

When people come to me for coaching, they generally know what they want. I ask the same question of everyone, “What have you actually done about this so far?”. I’m not being critical. I’m being curious. The answer? For the vast majority of people, it’s “absolutely nothing”, or as good as. Very occasionally someone will say, “Everything. I’ve done everything. Nothing’s worked.”

I can work out a terrific Plan of Action with people. I can increase their confidence, inspire them, intensify their motivation, build them up, make them more powerful.

But I can’t make them jump, take the steps, make it happen. Only you can do that. It doesn’t even matter how confident you’re feeling. If you don’t do the necessary, what you know needs to be done, nothing will change. You certainly won’t make the gains that you could. Don’t make the mistake of thinking “if only I had more confidence, then I’d get things done.”

It doesn’t work like that. There’s no substitute for plain, old-fashioned action. Just getting on with it.
And 16 yr old Jessica Watson’s comment ”You’ve just got to have a dream … and work hard”, encapsulates it all.

Coach Shelley’s Call to Action:

1. What preparation do you need to do this week, to be ready for opportunities?

2. What are 3 action steps that you plan on doing…consistently… every day for success?

Cheers Shelley Taylor-Smith

To THINK like a champion, TRAIN like a champion….

but first you have to be a winner from start to finish!!!

Last night, WA time, Mark Webber secured his first victory of the season and the third of his career on Sunday when he cruised to a sumptuous triumph for Red Bull in the Spanish Grand Prix.

The 33-year-old Australian, starting from his third pole position, made the most of that advantage to hold his place in the crush on the opening lap, resisting all attacks at the first corner, and streaking clear of the field.

Now think about the difference between Mark Webber’s win by 24 seconds and 2nd place.

The narrow margins between Gold and the rest …
What was the difference?

Hard work for sure…
Pure PASSION and MISSION
HEART in the race…

Making use of every God-given Champion talent they were given…

Most importantly: Exceptional COACHING, MENTORING and TRAINING…
Continuously. Every single day.

This is HOW the Champions performed up to their full potential.
This is HOW Mark Webber and the Red Bull team performed and won yesterday in the Spanish Grand Prix.
What we call Performing On Purpose.

Through years of scientific research it has been found that highly successful people… the true Champions in every sense of the word… people in the TOP 1% by any standard: Wealth, Power, Happiness… people who are living a life of meaning and significance… ALL have one thing in common.

They ALL have a highly evolved, unstoppable sense of PASSION, PURPOSE… and MISSION.

If you feel you are PASSIONLESS and DIRECTIONLESS… simply driving in circles … burning up the one life you have to live on things that matter little to you…

Yes, there is a key difference between people who find success beyond their greatest dreams and aspirations… and people who struggle to just make it paycheck to paycheck for most of their life.

In a word: Performance!

You need first MASTER your fundamentals…
Then, train to TRAIN…
Next, train to COMPETE…
Finally, train to WIN…

and I guarantee you will become a Purpose-Driven Success.

In the years I have been committed to personal development and helping people achieve their goals, both personally and professionally…I have found that people who fail to do this — even though they work their hearts out — will never find the success they so richly deserve.

It doesn’t have to take years to re-DREAM… re-IMAGINE… re-ENVISION… re-THINK and re-CREATE your life.

But it does take TRAINING!

I am amazed when coaching clients, whether preparing to achieve the Rottnest Channel 20km Marathon Swim, a new marketing campaign or planning their business or career goals….do not understand the power of training.

What habits support you achieving your goals? What habits do not support you achieving your goals?

We are creatures of HABIT!

It is time to train and learn the habits so you can win like a Champion….and achieve your birthright…success.

The Importance of Positive Belief…
Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Right now I know of a group of crazy people who are climbing Mount Everest.
Steve Bock teaming up with Adventures Global and my dear Rottnest Channel swimmer Patrick Hollingworth

As helping Patrick with his mental preparation we discussed the importance of belief and how it affects your attitude. If there is no place for self doubt and a poor attitude…it is as you attempt to become the 2nd West Australian to climb Mount Everest.

Once you set your goals, they must be pursued with passion, dedication and enthusiasm.

This requires a positive and proactive attitude—during the heat of the battle—as well as the lull in the action.

Nothing will torpedo your chance at success faster than a poor attitude. You can have clear and tangible goals, with the best laid plans in the world, but if you poison the well from which opportunity springs, you’ve just killed your future.

Think about it.
Passion, Possibilities and Positivity. They go hand-in-hand.

These three words are what generate BELIEVABILITY in your dreams and goals.

Is BELIEVABILITY a problem for you?

Attitude is about believability—believing in yourself, your goals, your organisation and your future.

A bad attitude TODAY leads to the loss of limitless future opportunities—opportunities that could have propelled you to new heights and vistas.

Please take some time today to think about your Number One Goal for 2010.

While SMART, this goal will not come EASY.

Look at this goal in light of the next 30 days attempting to GRIND you down. What are you going to do to maintain POSITIVITY?

One of the big drivers of Peak Performance to achieving your Champion Potential is your Attitude—how POSITIVE you are… how OPTIMISTIC you are… how ENTHUSIASTIC you are… how much raw BELIEVABILITY you have in your goals.

This week, pay very close attention to your ATTITUDE.
What are you telling yourself with your self-talk? Is it mostly POSITIVE… or frequently NEGATIVE?

Without a POSITIVE and CHAMPION ATTITUDE, you are just spinning your wheels, confusing effort with results.

Tune IN to your ATTITUDE. Turn it ON. Turn it UP!

As we head into the month of May 2010, take a hard look around your life. Don’t filter your observations through the “good enough” lens. Expect more!

Imagine what your life will be like when you are actually living what’s most important to you.

A Champion Attitude is committed to passionately living what you value.

Way back on January 1st I chose to do things slightly different this year.

I chose a theme for 2010.

By picking a positive theme rather than a negative New Year’s resolution (usually you’ll stop, break or change), I get much better results.

The theme for 2010 I chose is: “Be the Champion Shelley”
Being Shelley - down to earth, relatable & comfortable in my own skin; Doing Shelley - walking the talk presenting, training and coaching!

Why? Because I wanted to get back on track and focused on what Shelley Taylor-Smith & Champion Mindset Consulting - the brand represents- before my big move back to my hometown in Perth, Western Australia (after 17yrs in Sydney on the Northern Beaches in Manly) in December 2008 & pre-GFC.

So I say an indebted thanks to each of the 50 or so Champion Motivations subscribers who sent emails and/or facebook responses to my Christmas message back in December ‘09.

2000 Sydney Olympic Volleyball Gold Medallist, Kerri Pottharst summed up beautifully the response from most readers - “Shells thanks for telling it like it “really is”…from your heart and down to earth. I admire your honesty. Keep it coming!!!”

and another…. “I’ve never replied to any of your e-mails you have sent over the years, but I want to assure you of the great impression you make on me. I am always happy to read your kind words and I have with no plan collected all your motivational snippets, they were just so good and unique that I re-read occasionally, they are of great benefit … thank you for your steadfastness to those of us who luckily receive your e-mails, the lesson alone on perseverance and support you show is personally amazing to me. It has been a privilege to receive your kindnesses over such a long time. Thank you!”

Ok I shed tears and even though I did receive a few not so positive (even advice that I should change careers) I became more determined to persevere. (no does not sound like Shelley at all!!!)

So for December, January & February 2010 I put pen to paper investigating 3 important questions:

1. What are the benefits for Shelley Taylor-Smith when she is down to earth, relatable and comfortable in her own skin?
2. What is the Champion Brand - Champion Mindset Consulting that brings people knocking at our door?
3. What do we do that makes for happy customers?

So What Did Shelley Achieve in January and February 2010???

I launched myself into the new decade as Head Coach of the Rottnest Channel 20km Swim coaching 30 solos and 10 duos. A 4 month project that began on November 2nd and completed on 20 February 2010 with a 20km marathon swim Cottesloe to Rottnest Island, Western Australia. Results: Team Shelley 98% - achieving 1st place in 4hrs 41mins 30secs through to final place overall in 11hrs 30mins.

**Someone kindly reminded me that the only swimmer who did not finish (he retired at 12km) because he had been bedside at hospital with his son and had not slept for 48hrs prior to the race; this does qualify as a DID NOT FINISH. That was a commonsense decision to get out and not a failure.
Thanks Warren “WOW” Jones.

Here’s to seeing you real soon at a Personal Branding - Create Your Champion Brand YOU workshop soon. And if you’re not already a Champion Motivations subscriber then register now

Until next time…What basics do you need to get back to, to find your way back on track?

I can only imagine
Saturday, April 10th, 2010

I give it 100%. Inspire. Motivate. Educate my clients to be the best they can be through the presentations, trainings, workshops and coaching in Champion Mindset Consulting. Lend a hand to those in need. Provide assistance to charitable organisations who conduct amazing services to those less fortunate in our society.

But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck.
Today I watched this video and said to myself: “Shelley imagine what more you will achieve!”

Eighty-five times Dick Hoyt pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in Marathons. Eight times he’s not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a Wheelchair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and Pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars–all in the same day.

Dick’s also pulled him cross-country skiing, taken him on his back Mountain climbing and once hauled him across the U.S. On a bike. Makes Taking your son bowling look a little lame, right?

And what has Rick done for his father? Not much–except save his life. This love story began in Winchester , Mass. , 43 years ago, when Rick Was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him Brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs.

“He’ll be a vegetable the rest of his life;” Dick says doctors told him And his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. “Put him in an Institution.”

But the Hoyts weren’t buying it. They noticed the way Rick’s eyes Followed them around the room. When Rick was 11 they took him to the Engineering department at Tufts University and asked if there was Anything to help the boy communicate. “No way,” Dick says he was told. “There’s nothing going on in his brain.”

“Tell him a joke,” Dick countered. They did. Rick laughed. Turns out a Lot was going on in his brain. Rigged up with a computer that allowed Him to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his Head, Rick was finally able to communicate. First words? “Go Bruins!” And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the School organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, “Dad, I want To do that.”

Yeah, right. How was Dick, a self-described “porker” who never ran More than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he Tried. “Then it was me who was handicapped,” Dick says. “I was sore For two weeks.”

That day changed Rick’s life. “Dad,” he typed, “when we were running, It felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore!”

And that sentence changed Dick’s life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. He got into such hard-belly Shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon.

“No way,” Dick was told by a race official. The Hoyts weren’t quite a Single runner, and they weren’t quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few Years Dick and Rick just joined the massive field and ran anyway, then They found a way to get into the race Officially: In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the Qualifying time for Boston the following year.

Then somebody said, “Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?”

How’s a guy who never learned to swim and hadn’t ridden a bike since he Was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon? Still, Dick Tried.

Now they’ve done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii . It must be a buzzkill to be a 25-year-old stud Getting passed by an old guy towing a grown man in a dinghy, don’t you Think?

Hey, Dick, why not see how you’d do on your own? “No way,” he says. Dick does it purely for “the awesome feeling” he gets seeing Rick with A cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together.

This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best Time? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992–only 35 minutes off the world Record, which, in case you don’t keep track of these things, happens to Be held by a guy who was not pushing another man in a wheelchair at the Time.

“No question about it,” Rick types. “My dad is the Father of the Century.”

And Dick got something else out of all this too. Two years ago he had a Mild heart attack during a race. Doctors found that one of his arteries Was 95% clogged. “If you hadn’t been in such great shape,” One doctor told him, “you probably would’ve died 15 years ago.” So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other’s life.

Rick, who has his own apartment (he gets home care) and works in Boston, and Dick, retired from the military and living in Holland, Mass. , always find ways to be together. They give speeches around the country and compete in some backbreaking race every weekend, including Father’s Day.

That night, Rick will buy his dad dinner, but the thing he really wants to give him is a gift he can never buy.

“The thing I’d most like,” Rick types, “is that my dad sit in the chair and I push him once.”

I can only imagine. So ask yourself today: “What will you do to get up and push yourself out of your chair?”

CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD THE NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

Todays blog is courtesy of my Champion buddy from New Orleans Mr Kerry Daigle. Thanks Kerry, You’re the Champ!

“They weren’t supposed to win. After all, the New Orleans Saints were a 5 point underdog (or more…depending on who you spoke to). The media had latched on to what they claimed was the greatest quarterback of all time in Peyton Manning, a New Orleans native playing for the Indianapolis Colts. The problem was the media forgot that ‘Super Bowls’ are won by teams and not by one person. New Orleans had the better team.

“Oh, wait a minute, you might say, the better team was the Colts.” Or at least that’s what the media said. So, you bought the story. A lesson to learn is that teams win championships, not just one person.

“Build for your team a feeling of oneness, of dependence upon one another, and of strength to be derived from unity.” Vince Lombardi

Someone once said that winning is not as important as ‘playing the game’ and having fun. Sure, having fun is one thing but winning is everything. Especially in this case.

Vince Lombardi wrote, “Winning is not a sometime thing. It’s an all time thing. You don’t win once in a while. You don’t do things right once in a while. You do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.”

Lombardi continues, “There is no room for second place. Everytime a football player goes out to play to ply his trade he’s got to play form the ground up…from the soles of his feet right up to his head. That’s ok. You’ve got to be smart to be number one in any business.. But more importantly, you’ve got to play with your HEART …with every fibre of your body. If you are lucky enough to find a guy with alot of head and a lot of heart, he’s never going to come off the field second.”

I think Vince Lombardi was watching ‘Cool’ Brees (Drew is his first name) from above. After all, have you ever seen a “player” play with his heart more than Drew Brees? The difference in the game is the Colts used the playbook and they did play with their head. New Orleans coach Sean Peyton and his team played with their hearts. Enough said.

Ironically, Lombardi’s grandson is now the quarterback coach. Interesting, isn’t it?
Put it all together. It was destiny. Or maybe it was a plan. Ask Sean Peyton. He would know. After all, nothing was going to stop the New Orleans Saints.

“A great leader never sets himself above his followers except in carrying responsibilities.” JULES ORMONT

What I’ve learned over the years is the heart controls the mind and the muscles in the body. At this point is where you will find champions. The champions fight and play hard and with a positive mental mindset. They play like champions. They think like champions.

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” CALVIN COOLIDGE

I’ve also learned another lesson. I’ve also learned from the New Orleans Saints that the humblest of all men are the strongest. 75% of everything we heard from the media for the last two weeks was about the Colts and their ‘greatness’ while New Orleans sat back being humble but strong in their courage and believing in themselves.

The Saints played with their hearts and didn’t mind the ‘blood, sweat, and tears’ they experienced along the way to become the World Champion Football Team in Super Bowl XLIV. They enjoyed the discipline and hard work they engaged in to become winners. They were a team of ‘left-overs’…….players that other coaches forgot about.

No, I don’t believe they will be called “America’s Team”. The Dallas Cowboys own that title. This is the ‘DREAM TEAM’. A team of players and coaches who believed in their dream. A group of ‘WHO DAT’ fans that continued to believe in this football team for 43 years. Sure, some attended games with bags on their heads years ago but they still came to the games hoping one day they could remove those bags. Now, they can forever throw them away.

The DREAM TEAM has arrived.

The Colts had to not only play the Saints……they had to play the whole state of Louisiana. A state of 4.5 million WHO DAT fans full of emotion. The Colts knew that coming in. Especially, Peyton Manning. That was too much to overcome.

If you could take a ‘silent voting poll’ among NFL players I can almost guarantee you that 80% were pulling for New Orleans in their hearts. Call it ‘gris gris’……or ‘voodoo’….or just call it destiny. It was New Orleans’ time. It was meant to be. They were unbeatable and proved it by dismantling all the ‘great’ quarterbacks in the NFL this season, especially in the playoffs.

31 to 17. World Champs.

Who dat, who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints? Who dat? Who dat?”

Thanks again Kerry for this amazing article.
Cheers one and all

The Bleedingly Obvious New Years Resolution!

I don’t know about you but I feel like New Year Resolutions have been done to death the past week and I wanted to put a different twist on 2010 (paradigm shift) and ask you for your one word or phrase that describes your “intention” for 2010!

So here is a “Champion Tip”, which comes to you from Dan Robey of Positive Habits.

By reading today’s blog you’ll discover how to decide your best INTENTION for 2010 or New Years Resolution Ever! Dan Robey highlights the bleedingly obvious but like most things in our hectic, chaotic, everyday life where we are living it jam-packed to the max….I am not surprised that you may have overlooked the bleedingly obvious.

So enjoy this read!!!

“Here is the best New Years Resolution ever!! Count Your Blessings

That’s right…I said count your blessings.

Make it a habit this new year to take inventory of the good things you have been blessed with on a regular basis.

What do I mean by that? Here is an example. Quite often I get emails from people who are depressed. For health reasons, or relationship reasons, financial reasons, or something else, they feel miserable and very unhappy.

But, when they take stock of what they actually have they quickly realize that they are fortunate
and blessed in many ways.

There are several assumptions that I can immediately make when I receive an email from such a person as described above.

* The ability to send an email means that it is very likely that they either own a computer or have access to one. Count that as one blessing. You see, there are millions, upon millions of people in
this world that do not have computers, nor access to them.

They are blessed by having access to the largest source of information ever available to mankind …the internet. They can now find information to help solve their problems, be it health, financial, or otherwise.

The millions of people who do not have access to this vast knowledge pool called the internet cannot do what they can do….they are fortunate….very fortunate.

* It is also very likely that the person sending the email message has a roof over their head. You see, computers do not hold up well in the rain. Again, there are millions of people living in huts, or temporary shelters.

There is a great quote from Eddie Rickenbacker, a fighter pilot in WWII who had to ditch his plane in the ocean. Eddie and his crew floated on a raft for 3 weeks in the ocean without food, or fresh water. When they were finally rescued, Eddie said, “for the rest of my life, if I have a roof over my head and food, I will never complain about anything.”

* The person that is sending the email is obviously literate….they know how to read, write and type. Do you know how many people there are in this world who do not know how to read? Again, another blessing added to their list.

It is amazing what we can learn about a person just by receiving one email from them.

Your Champion Action Today (…tomorrow and for the future):

Here is an exercise you should do on a regular basis, make it a new Champion habit. This is a kind of personal inventory of your blessings…keep it private and close for reference.

Make a list on a notepad, call it your “blessings list.” Place a “Yes” next to each question about your life that is good and a “No” next to an area of your life you feel is bad right now.

>> Do you have a spouse? Is your spouse supportive?
>> Do you have a family? Is your family supportive?
>> Do you have children? Are your children supportive?
>> Do you have a home? Do you have a job? Do you like your job?
>> Can you read and write?
>> Do you have access to a computer?
>> Do you go to a church? Is your church supportive? Do you have faith in God?
>> Do you live in a country where it is possible to increase your education and get a good job?
>> Do you have a positive attitude?
>> Do you have access to books that can teach you how to improve your attitude?
>> Are you motivated?
>> Do you have access to books that can teach you how to be more motivated?
>> Is your health good?
>> Do you have access to books that can help you maintain your health?

Do you see now how this is going? Even for the areas where you indicated “No” there is probably a “Yes” next to the question asking you if there is a knowledge source or support group that can help you change that “No” to a “Yes.”

It is amazing how often we take for granted the blessings that we have. This exercise can help anyone who is down and depressed about life. Pass it on to others who you think may need it.”

And today remember how to think of yourself as you go about your day, your week, your month, your year: Hello, my name is GRATITUDE!

Go for your gold in 2010!
Cheers Shelley Taylor-Smith
