In less than 12hrs (downunder that is), it will be a whole new year. And tonight, lots of people will be celebrating. What will make 2012 the best year ever for you?

I’m planning to do some incredible things. I’m planning to accomplish some long-time goals, and get over a few hurdles that have been holding me back. Physically, mentally, and emotionally, I’d like to be in harmony with my true authentic self.

And it all starts right now.

As we head into a new year together, I want to take this opportunity to encourage you to give yourself a break right now. 2011 may have not turned out how you would have liked, but if you waste your energy focusing on what could have been you may miss the opportunities put before you to move forward in 2012!

It is a sad statistic that more people give up the fight at this time of year than at any other. They feel they have failed again, not moving forward at all, and wonder if it is all worth it. Over the many hours of sitting with people, listening to their story, I have compiled a list of things to avoid when I assess my year.

* comparing myself to others,
* measuring my success by “things gained” or “tasks completed”,
* over thinking and dwelling on past mistakes, and
* the negative influences and words spoken over me by others.

Drawing a line in the sand and deciding to move forward, despite the past, is the only way to start your journey into a bigger, better 2012. We remove the power our past can have over us by only spending time on the “past” side of the line long enough to reflect on what we can learn from to build a better future, whilst enjoying the present.

* Who did I help in 2011?
* What new skills did my year help me develop?
* What have I got to be thankful for?
* Who did I get to meet?
* Why am I doing what I have chosen to do?
* What is really important to me and why?

Take a look at your life like a small fishing boat. The boat itself represents our present, sometimes on calm waters, other times tossed by storms and sometimes it seems like it is sinking. Our past can be an anchor or an engine, we choose. One stops us from moving forward and the other propels us forward, moving us into calmer waters.

Let me encourage you that no matter how stormy the seas may look for you at the moment, don’t abandon ship. Pull up your anchor, let go of 2011, set a well planned course into 2012 and rely on the power of the engine to bring stability back into your life.

Dive into 2012!

Here are a few guidelines for the journey:
* Only bring people into your boat that wants you to move forward,
* Have a clear path set with contingencies for uncharted waters,
* Stop comparing your boat to the other ones around you,
* Surround yourself with “lighthouse” people, who can warn you when you are moving too close to the rocks,
* Throw unnecessary items overboard like past hurts, conflicts and unforgiveness, and
* Make a decision to spend more time enjoying the ride in the boat knowing it is the boat you have been called to be the captain of.

Thank you so much for allowing me to share my life experiences with you. I hope in some small way I have been able to encourage you to believe in your inner winner; the powerful Champion within “YOU”. Take a break, service your boat engine, clean the decks and I look forward to a bigger and brighter 2012 with you.

Lots of your “gold” coming your way!
Cheers Shelley Taylor-Smith

Are you ready to design your day, your year?
Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Right now… someone has their head in their hands saying to themselves: “What did I achieve today? I did not get through even half of my to-do list! What happened?”

Sound familiar?

Question: How do I achieve what I want in any given day?
Answer: Focus ONLY on what’s MOST important each day…

Are You Ready To Design Your Day?

To achieve your dreams… to maintain balance in the heat of the battle… to know that you have done the best you could given the circumstances you faced… requires you to focus on the important, and not be consumed by the urgent. This is a major driver of success, both personally and professionally. It is not hard to focus, if you know what’s important to you, and what’s not.

For any task to be a priority, it must have more importance than something else. Importance comes from your values, goals and commitments.

Design your day around achieving your primary goals.

Here are 3 questions to get you focused and in the zone of designing your day right now…

1. What has been the focal point of your day so far?
2. Check your schedule today. Which tasks are designed to get you closer to your goals?
3. Tomorrow, when you schedule and prioritise your tasks, which task will you put in your most productive time slot?

Without question, the Results you actually GET in the TIME you have… will determine your ultimate success or failure.

Peace of mind comes from knowing you have done your very best. If you have, day-by-day, achieved the best that is in you, what more is there?

That’s right, nothing.

However, you owe it to your life to actually give your best—consistently.

You owe it to yourself, and everyone around you, to make absolutely certain that you are operating at peak performance… putting your God-given Champion gifts and talents to their highest and best use.

If you want to produce better results this week, you can.

Focus On The Important… Not The Urgent…

To achieve your dreams…

to maintain balance in the heat of the battle…

to know that you have done the best you could given the circumstances you faced…

requires you to focus on the important, and not be consumed by the urgent.

This is a major driver of success, both personally and professionally. It is not hard to focus, if you know what’s important to you, and what’s not.

Doing Your Champion Best Means… Focusing on First Things First.

Champion Action Time:
1. Set aside 30 minutes in your diary and title the task: DOING MY BEST FIRST!

2. Write out what you hope to accomplish next year. What will make you feel GREAT next year at this time, when you look back on the year that was?

3. Now set aside 30 minutes in your diary for tomorrow or a day that you can complete the following task: WHY DOING MY BEST IS SO IMPORTANT TO ME! I want you to explain to yourself WHY this is so IMPORTANT to you.

(i) My Hopes For 2012…FAMILY is Important because……………..
(ii) My Hopes for 2012 …FRIENDS is Important because…………..
(iii) My Hopes for 2012 …MYSELF is Important because……….

Look closely at what you have written down.

How are you going to move these hopes off this page and into your life?

The simple answer: By constantly remaining focused on the important, and not permit life’s urgencies to wear you down and wear you out.
Right now your list is only a list. It is a reflection of what you HOPE you will achieve.

The simple fact is, when you prioritise your life, you determine where your time will produce the most rewarding and satisfying results; based on your priorities on your personal list of values, goals and commitments.

Urgency is a quality given to something requiring immediate attention

…regardless of its relative value. You can spend years chasing down one urgency after another.

Or, you can focus on top priorities and ensure that what’s most important to you actually shows up in your life.

By choosing priorities over urgencies, you stop reacting to circumstances and start creating a life of power, passion and purpose.

Cheers to designing your day and year 2012

Why It Pays To Be Vulnerable…
Thursday, July 28th, 2011

When was the last time you did something truly vulnerable and shared it with your clients and prospects; even your family and friends?

I hope it was within the last week. You may think I’m crazy for saying this (or you may think it’s a no-brainer), but –

By being YOU is the perfect place to show a bit of your humanity… to let them in on some of your mistakes, as well as how you overcame them.

Yes it is a a risk. But it’s also good practice. Practice being vulnerable, that is. There is a connection between vulnerability, approachability and profitability. When you open yourself to the world, the world will opens its wallet to you. But only if you’re willing to strip away the superficialities and occupy your vulnerability.

There are two BIG reasons why you want to be vulnerable:
1. Showing that you’re vulnerable builds trust and understanding. People will like you better and want to connect if they get a sense of who you are under all that “expertise” or skill.
2. Being real is more fun and… well, more real!

Shelley with fellow FINA TOWSC member, Steven Munatones (USA) Director www.OpenWaterSource.com

And last week I did just that! I “stuffed-up” in my role as Technical Official at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Shanghai, China. I was told it is unacceptable to take photos whilst officiating on the feeding pontoon. Forget the fact that the photos were taken at a time when the race was happening 200m away and other officials were also violating this protocol, I had to “cop it on the chin” in front of forty-five international officials.

When I started writing the Champion Mindset Motivation ezine back in 2001, I had this idea that I needed to know more, seem perfect and be the “wise one” having achieved amazing feats as a 7-time World Champion with a proven track record of success.

Now in the Champion Mindset workshops and Mental Toughness coaching programs, I admit I have “stuffed-up” many times, even failed and then bounced back to go on and achieve higher heights due to my inner resilience; which has shown more of myself and relates to my clients.

So when I hear team managers, coaches and even small business owners say they don’t know enough to serve their niche market, it reminds me of me back then. But that’s just a lie we tell ourselves.

Of course, showing your vulnerability at 1on1 meetings educates your clients, colleagues and team mates. Some managers/team leaders/coaches will correct mistakes or take them step-by-step through how to do something. But your tips will land more deeply if you also share how you got there — which is almost always about fumbling into competency, right?

When I launched my Think Like A Champion blog in 2008, I started following some pro bloggers like Peter Godfrey, and I witnessed in his blog posts a kind of take-me-as-I-am transparency that really appealed to me. I noticed his posts attracted lots of comments.

So I shifted my approach by determining my target audience and developing strategies whilst redefining my own Champion Brand (the Business of Me) and as a result my motivational presentations and personal branding workshops are receiving rave reviews. I delivered the Champion Brand Promise and unleashed my inner winner sharing; “I’m comfortable in my own skin… and all its wobbly bits!” And it’s paying off.

Who knew? (You might be saying “Well duh, Shelley” but really, I’m not the only one this is a new paradigm for.)

This is the age of social networking. This is a time when having more fun and being more real is good business. The goal is to show more of who you are — just a regular Joe Blow or Jane Doe — while you also show your unique style, your extraordinary qualities and know how.

Believe me; you have a great story to tell. Everyone does. And stories rock! These stories are your Champion Brand Signature Style and knowing how to identify and present yourself by getting them into your marketing, your networking, your team meetings… everywhere where you connect with your people is the key to turning your know-how into profit or promotion.

Tell me what you think about this whole vulnerability thing and your brand signature style in the COMMENTS below. When you stuff-up what do you do and focus on to bounce back? If you’re hip to it, thanks for leading the way. If it’s new to you, I double dare you to share your vulnerability with your team/colleagues/family once a week!

And thanks for your loyalty with me through all the ways I keep learning to help you to get comfortable in your own skin, define, design and deliver your Champion Brand to dominate your marketplace / niche industry and achieve your goals better.

Cheers to you becoming the Champion of your own world!
Shelley Taylor-Smith

PS: following being reprimanded for my stuff-up in Shanghai, many officials offered their support saying they too have made errors and to not sweat the small stuff! Also I was reminded that I created history becoming the first female Chief Referee in a Men’s Open Water Swimming FINA World Championship event. The BOMShell is happening around Australia! The Business of Me with Shelley Taylor-Smith: How to Use the Power of Personal Branding to Create Your Own Champion Brand workshops in Perth on Thursday, 11th August 2011. Sydney & Melbourne TBA September 2011.

The silly season is upon us and it is not even Summer here downunder… and many are feeling the heat.

With the warmer weather in the Wild Wild West in Perth, Western Australia comes early sun rises and the opportunity to get out there and energise yourself for the day ahead with your favourite exercise.

People come to me for coaching, whether to improve their athletic performance, eradicate self doubt or a self defeating attitude to boost their confidence and create the power of a Champion attitude and focus.

….and the one thing I remind myself about consistently, as I do my clients, is focusing on the things that count. Too often we beat ourselves up for all the things we should have done, rather than thinking about what do I need to do.

Do you find yourself focusing on the good times or bad?

Here is my suggestion for you.

Have a great memory of your achievements and forget all the things you should have done or could have done better. What is one achievement from your past you can focus on?

What I call your Gold Medal Moments

1. Create a list of your personal achievements when you were standing on your dais and you were the Champion of your own world.
2. Separate the list into the following areas: strength, power, confidence, focus, energetic, calm, relaxed, in the zone and joy.
3. In each of the lists write your personal achievements when you felt those emotions that boost your energy levels, performance and productivity.

Practice the following…. when you find yourself focusing on the things you should have done or could have done better and with those thoughts come all those nasty feelings and emotions… turn and focus on what you want to feel instead and remember the times, that specific time, as if looking through your own eyes and see what you saw, feel what you felt, hear what you heard and what you may have been saying to yourself.

If you are training for your next competition whether an open water swim or triathlon; it is important to stack those gold medal moments in a special place so if you need them during training or a competition; you can access them easily.

Watch as your energy levels increase, your distractions disappear and your confidence soar!

Create A Champion Mindset and Be Totally Happy Being You!

Cheers Shelley

As you know I regularly talk about how grateful I am Canadians are proud and want to share the passion for all things and not let a moment go by…seize the day.

The greatest show on earth…. has come to the tiny village of Roberval, Quebec, Canada; the host for the 6th FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships, 15-23 July 2010.

Roberval, a town of 11,000 residents has welcomed in open arms, the 124 elite open water swimming competitors from 30 countries.

I will be writing daily blogs and sharing interviews with Champions - athletes, coaches, organisers, referees, officials and volunteers.

The following was reported by Steven Munatones, Chief Editor of Daily News of Open Water Swimming

Dr. Julio Maglione, the FINA President, opened the festivities with a bilingual address to the gathered media at today’s press conference. “I want to express my sincere gratitude to Swimming Canada, the city of Roberval and the local organising committee.”

Swimming Canada CEO Pierre Lafontaine echoed the gratitude of Dr. Maglione at today’s press conference. In his usual enthusiastic manner, Pierre said, “The local organizing committee even went so far in changing the water temperature of lac St-Jean.”

Pierre was referring to the notoriously historical cold water of lac St-Jean has increased in temperature to an unseasonably and unprecedented 24°C (75°C) that have greeted the swimmers at the championships. Most of the swimmers were quite happy and surprised to learn of the warm-water conditions.

“Swimming Canada is excited to host the world championships and we are thankful to Dr. Maglione for having confidence in us. Sport is a place where people can dream. That is the power of sport.”

Canadian National Team coach Ron Jacks repeated the excitement of Dr. Maglione and Pierre. “The 7-member Canadian team is in good spirits after a 5-day training camp in Montreal. The swimmers have had a great week of preparation in Montreal. The 10K will be our great event. With the event now being in the Olympics, we are seeing a surge of swimmers trying to grain that experience for the 2012 Olympic Games qualifier next year in Shanghai.”

“The Canadian team is comprised with some solid veterans such as Simon Tobin of Quebec, Zsofie Balaz of Toronto and Nadine Williams of Sherwood Park who all competed at the 2009 World Swimming Championships. I’m optimistic that we will get a few surprise performances from our veterans and rookies.”

The Canadian team includes Xavier Desharnais, Simon Tobin, Richard Weinberger, Zsofia Balazs, Karyn Jewell, Joanie Guillemetee-Simard and Nadine Williams.

Thanks Steven Munatones and Daily News of Open Water Swimming for that back end story on the Canadian Open Water Swim Team.

Enjoy my interview below with Pierre Lafonteine, Swimming Canada CEO.

Let me know how you are enjoy the videos and blog posts and what skill helps you have a more enjoyable open water swimming experience. I look forward to sharing the amazing experience of the FINA World Championships and the passionate hospitality of the host city of Roberval.

It has been an amazing couple of weeks in the world of personal achievements.

I was in awe standing at North Head watching “Our Own” Aussie 16yr old Jessica Watson sail through Sydney Heads completing her solo sailing circumnavigation…well it brought me to tears. Then followed the American 13yr old who climbed Mt Everest. WOW!

Congrats to my fellow West Australian, Patrick Hollingworth
who successfully climbed the Summit of Mt Everest last week. I received a SMS text message. “Shelley. Can you believe it. I climbed Mt Everest. From Your Hero Pat” Yes we can believe it! And you’re my hero Patrick for following your dream and never ever saying never! (Pat below with Sherpas Lakpa & Angkaji, at 8850m on the summit of Mount Everest.)

I’m always intrigued when I ask people to fill in the end of that sentence: “Life is a ….”
So last week I posted the question on facebook and was amazed at how many different answers came. (email me now courses@championmindset.com.au Shelley, here is my response to “Life is a …”)

Battle is one of the most common answers that pop up. B*&ch is another…
Then these ones.
..Game…
.. an adventure!
.. a pleasure, one after the other
.. box of chocolates
.. fantastic experience that should be enjoyed with the ones you love.
.. nice spot in the sun to warm up before the days mayhem
.. blessing and we are not here forever.
.. Marathon not a track meet
.. Rollercoaster!!!! - has its ups and downs but you need to jump on the ride and not sit on the sidelines watching life go by
.. “GIFT” and the gift will only be as wonderful as “YOU” make it!
.. ♫ “Highway”.. and im gonna ride it…♫
… precious miracle. We’re only given one chance, so live each day as if it’s your last. But remember, life will reward you with how much you put into it…
.. Cabaret old chum….!
.. Grand opening. Not a dress rehersal.
.. Game Day!
.. Minestrone

I choose to look at life like a game. It’s meant to ‘play’. You have heard me say many times in my presentations and workshops “thanks for playing it 100%”. Granted, I’d be lying to you if I said that it’s all ‘play’ and always ‘fun’.

Look I’m human too and I have ups and downs. Yes I do! As I’ve stated many times, I’ve failed more than I’ve succeeded in life and with my business too. Being my own boss I have had to fire myself a few times and learn new skills, adapt and grow. At the end of the day though, take all the ups and downs, and sum it up, it is a game…

And it’s a game to be WON! I know you can win. And know that it’s relative…

I meet and work with people who are already successful, who have achieved their millions and the ‘win’ for them is different than someone working to achieve their first goal, lose weight, get fit, swim a marathon, run a marathon, take that first step “admitting” they have a problem, stop procrastinating, get out of their comfort zone, follow their dream to launch their business ….

We’re all at different places in the game.

And in the course of the game, sometimes we win, sometimes we lose, however we get to start over everyday and build on the next, learn from our mistakes…

You were built to win… Built to prosper… Built to achieve your birthright…SUCCESS!

Take small steps and just keep moving forward each and every day and in a year, you’ll shock yourself at how far you’ve come….

I admire Jessica Watson for her persistence and courage and willingness to learn
…despite the setbacks she had in the beginning. Despite all the doubters, the nay-sayers. Today she is Australia’s hero with her simple message “Anything is possible. If you have a dream and you work hard you will achieve.”

I wonder, like you, what will be the next BIG thing for her…

Or Patrick - who swam to Rottnest earlier this year as a warm up for his Mt Everest Summit.
He said he felt most ‘natural’ climbing mountains, where most others feel ‘unnatural’, however he dove in and went for it. He made mistakes in the past. He didn’t focus on his mistakes. He learned from them and said he would prepare himself the best possible way. He stayed focused on his bigger goals. And look what he did. He became the 3rd West Australian to climb Mt Everest. Not bad huh!

HINT- when your goals are bigger than your obstacles, it’s easy to stay the course.

2 unique people, with 2 different skill sets. I could list hundreds here…
However the one thing I see they have in common. They are willing to get in the game! Next, they are willing to make A LOT of mistakes while playing the game. They just keep playing.

I talk regularly to my coaching clients…well after they have let go of me, which for some is a struggle…
I mean I am a coach not a crutch! So speaking to one of them the other day about some set backs they’ve had in their business recently and they were discouraged… (yes, they are real people too that get discouraged and down sometimes). At the end of the day though, they minimized the setback and discouragement and focused on what they wanted…

So who didn’t fall off their first two-wheeler?

Which reminds me of my dear marathon swimming mate, James Kegley, telling the story about his son Jesse when he took off his training wheels (see picture below); “It is so much fun to watch him grow and ask to try new things…the training wheels came off after a friend rode by without them.”

We all learn a lot from each other… Get in the game… Play to win!
And when you lose sometimes, just keep getting BACK in the game!

>>> Oprah failed before success…
>>> Michael Jordan failed before success… (he was cut from his high-school basketball team)
….And the list goes on. You’re born to win!

Shelley’s Success Lesson for this Week:

1. Commit to Actually DOING Whatever It Takes — Then DO It…
Even if you think you can’t do something well the first time, try it anyway. Select one activity that looks as difficult as your first two-wheeler, and schedule a time this week to get on it.

2. What have you been putting off doing because you thought you couldn’t do it well?

3. Study Oprah, Michael Jordan or someone you admire who has succeeded after many setbacks Research. Read. Study them. Learn how they overcame … whether their mindset, motivation, mental toughness Learn their “playing the game” strategy and start applying it today so you too can win!!!

And if you’re still stuck falling off your two-wheeler… then consider giving me a call to discuss the Champion Mindset Motivation Coaching Program on

Now get on your bike ….get on with playing the game!
