Every year, millions of Australians make New Year’s resolutions…and then just as predictably break them.

The development and subsequent failure of the New Years resolution transcends any normal thought patterns, however people persist with a weary tradition that is generally serves only to undermine the individuals mindset.

New Years resolutions never achieve anything except for fostering a nation of failures. Instead of making meaningless goals, take responsibility for your life and create change. Change doesn’t come through New Years resolutions but through embracing change and addressing the root cause of your problems!

Failing to follow through with New Year resolutions only succeeds in making you feel miserable and will subconsciously set the pattern for 2009.

Will you choose in 2009 to toughen you up, smarten you up and develop a fight-back attitude?

“When the pain you’re in is greater than the pain it takes to change …then you are ready for change!”

It is that time…time to thrive and survive in what is shaping up to be the most challenging year. The next 12 months are going to create more successes and failures than the last 25 years combined.

There will be people who will be barely able to put food on the table …and others who develop the winning skills to actually THRIVE in this terrible economic meltdown. This is your moment of truth…your moment of choice…your moment of action. Its crunch time in 2009!

Asses your willingness to make a real change in 2009 by answering the following questions:

1. Is it the process of changing that you don’t want to go through?
2. Do you have emotional and physical support around you – friends, partner, family, colleagues, and mentor?
3. Are you afraid of the unknown? It can stifle our motivation and keep us stuck in an unhappy situation for years. So why do we fear change – when the rewards can be more than we have ever anticipated. It is normal to fear change, but it is how you think and feel about the change which is really the point. How can you overcome your fear?
4. Does your ego get in the way? Your own behaviour could be the cause of your problems,
5. Are you wearing blinkers, or blaming others for their mistakes?
6. How high do the stakes need to be for you before you change?

To achieve extraordinary results, you must change your approach to life and change it now. Success and happiness can only come from within you. You must pinpoint what is causing your lack of motivation, inconsistent results and unhappiness and you will define the core of who you are, what your values are and where your motivation comes from?

To thrive, you must develop a “fight-back attitude”; to proactively position yourself for the long, tough battle ahead.

Anyone who wants to not quit yet again…it is time to get up, get over it and get on with it!

Go for your gold in 2009!

Seven Pounds
Friday, March 20th, 2009

Will Smith stars in his new movie Seven Pounds playing ‘Ben Thomas’, an IRS Agent who seems to be quite unstable. In the movie we follow ‘Ben’ as he goes around doing what IRS men do, and you might even question his work ethics (harassment, abuse, stalking etc).

Regardless of how confusing and lost you might feel when you start watching the movie, bear with it, it actually has a plot you will soon come to understand.

“It is within my power to drastically change their circumstances” - Ben

The movie will keep you curious and constantly guessing until the pieces start to click together.

I’m sure there are critics out there who don’t enjoy films like this, but I’m really glad to have something more than the mindless time killers out in the market. I truly believe that movies like Seven Pounds and The Pursuit of Happyness can make us all take a good look at ourselves, our lives, and inspire us into action.

Today’s success tip comes from Lauren Burns.

Lauren created sporting history by winning the first ever Olympic gold medal for taekwondo when the sport made its debut at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Since retiring from taekwondo, she has become a sought after speaker and inspiration to many.

Have you ever experienced a low point in your sporting career? Can you tell us what happened?

It was during the 1999 World Championships in Canada. I was ready - training better than I ever had before. Having been to the last three championships, and with plans to retire after the Olympic Games in 2000, this was my last shot to reach my long-term goal of winning a world championship. It was my time and I was sure of it.

My first fight went well - I won 12-1. My next fight was against the current world champion, Shu Ju Chu from Chinese Taipei. The fight was close and ran at a draw for most of it with the tension and concentration thick between us. Each time one of us scored a point the other would score straight away and with a few seconds to go in the last round it was still a draw. Attempting to seal the decision and to show aggressive match management (a factor taken into consideration by the judges in case of a tie), I attacked. She countered and scored. The decision went to Chinese Taipei which then went on to win the tournament.

Even at world championship level, Taekwondo is not seeded so the draw can have a huge impact on results. Because I fought Chu in the second round I walked away from that competition with no medal, no ranking, and some shining bruises. Feeling at a complete low after the fight I mustered up the strength to sit in the stands, recording Chu’s fights throughout the day.

Dejected and miserable I had no idea how handy those tapes would be during the course of the following year. When I got back to Australia I watched those videos hundreds of times. I picked her apart, studied her every move, and simulated her in training. She became my focus. If I could beat her, I could beat anyone.

As fate would have it, my first fight at the Olympics was Shu Ju Chu. It was a close fight but this time I came away the winner. Looking back I know that if I hadn’t lost to her at the World Championships I probably wouldn’t have had the tactical skills to beat her at the Olympics.

Every challenge we have leads us on a different path. We are human beings and we will all have events in our lives that continue to challenge us.

Some challenges are bigger and more difficult than others but I believe that it is the way we deal with them that makes us who we are and gives us the ability to move forward and grow. Often it is the challenges that we face or the mistakes that we make that change us, give us clarity or allow us to look at our life from a different perspective.

Today’s success tip comes from Lisa McInnes-Smith.

At 26 years of age, Lisa set her biggest goal: to positively affect one million Australian teenagers, a goal that was to change her life. In the 8½ years it took to achieve her goal, Lisa travelled the country speaking in schools and to youth groups.

Even though most people know how important it is to have goals, why do you think so many people fail to set them?

Most people know the theory behind goal setting but their fear is sometimes greater than the excitement of the goal. Some people’s lives are run by fear - fear of failure, fear of disappointment, fear of letting people down, fear of success, fear of the unknown. Others thrive on faith, the possibility of success, of overcoming, of succeeding, of making a difference, of making a whole new pathway for themselves. It takes faith to set goals and it takes faith to fight fear.

Fear is a formidable foe; it’s entangled in our thinking, our beliefs and our thoughts about the future. Fear is what most people think they must conquer before they go after their goals. Funnily enough, goal setting is a pathway to defeating fear. Every step toward the goal pushes fear further away. Competence builds confidence and confidence leads to action. Action achieves goals.

So why is it that so many people fail to set goals?
1. They don’t take the time to write them down.
2. They don’t make the time to read them.
3. They don’t make a plan to reach each goal.
4. They don’t write down the benefits of achieving each goal.

All of these steps are easy to do so it just takes a decision to get started and a commitment to follow through.

If you don’t quit…you will make it!
Friday, March 20th, 2009

Don’t Quit
Here’s an inspirational video on not giving up.

I’ve taken the liberty of typing up the Don’t Quit Poem:
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will.
When the road you’re trudging, seems all up hill.
When funds are low, and debts are high.
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.

When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest, if you must…. but don’t you quit
Life is strange, with its twists and turns
As every one of us sometimes learns.

And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow
You may succeed with another blow
Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far:

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit -
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

As I always say: “if you don’t quit…you will make it.”

Nick Vujicic - Life Without Limbs
Friday, March 20th, 2009

Here is a truly amazing story of 25 year old Nick Vujicic who was born without limbs.

Nick learnt to deal with his disability, and it was only when he began to embrace his situation that he started to achieve greater things in his life.

Individuals like Nick Vujicic can teach us to appreciate what we have, and encourage us to never give up, that we can overcome the challenges in our lives.

“People say to me, ‘How can you smile?’” he says. “Then they realize ‘there’s got to be something more to life than meets the eye if a guy without arms and legs is living a fuller life than I am.’

Watch this space…..as I have the opportunity to meet Nick in May. I will be working out a way to interview him for the Think Like A Champion Club members.
